James Boag: Yoga and the Sun

(ENGLISH BELOW)

Pravidelně část roku tráví v jihoindickém Mysore, kde dokončil svá studia sanskrtu a kde pravidelně vede kurzy zaměřené na nauku Bhagavad Gíty, Jóga súter a indické mytologie.

Yoga and the Sun
This weekend we will explore practical ‘whole life’ teachings of yoga through the lens of the Sun, and the yoga of song, movement and meditation.

The Sun is one of the great yogic archetypes: symbol of the ‘karma yogin’ – the one whose actions are established in yoga; and symbol of the light of awareness that enables our life and all our experiences.

Our holistic exploration will include the symbolism of Sūrya Namaskāra: how sun salutations encode the whole path and aim of yoga practice, and how this can help us deepen our practical understanding of principles to help cultivate harmony and integration through all aspects of our lives.

Movement content will include:
Sūrya Namaskāra as an emblem and ‘distilled encoding’ of the whole of yoga practice: how we can work with yogic Sūrya Namaskāra principles to infuse our life with the nourishing, healing, transformative gifts of the Sun as the great symbol of the light of centred conscious awareness. This will include:
– how we can cultivate friendliness and kindness within ourselves, even when we are working hard with the various challenges and responsibilities of life,
-how we can use yoga practices to foster evolution in all parts of our lives
– how we can empower all types of movement practice with the holistic principles of yoga
– Different ways to practice ‘saluting the sun’ so we can bring that nourishing energy into our life in all types of situations.
-How to practice physical Sūrya Namaskāra safely and efficiently through all the stages and cycles of life.
What will we do on this program?
Working with the principles of applied yoga philosophy, we will sing, we will move, we will meditate, we will inquire and explore: how can we infuse and empower our lives with the practical and illuminating gifts of yoga? What does it mean to foster a nourishing, warming fire of yogic discipline in our lives? And how can we do this in a sustainably evolutionary way?
What will we learn/experience?
-how we can work with the foundational principles of yoga to cultivate harmony, efficiency and fulfilment in all aspects of our lives
-how we can bring the innate technologies of haṭha yoga into broad spectrum movement and all aspects of our life so they can support skilful and satisfying action, and greater ease and efficiency through the challenges of life
-how we can work simply with the accessible yet powerful practices of kirtan, sound and song, for healing and restoration, to harmonise our vibration, cleanse the field of our being, and help energy flow through all parts of ourselves
-a holistic and multi-layered understanding of Sūrya Namaskāra as an emblem of the whole course of yoga practice, and how we can make our work with sun salutations and related yoga techniques more powerful, nourishing and efficient
A Few More Words About Kirtan
The yoga tradition offers myriad tools we can work with to cultivate integration and recover our innate capacities for deep presence and sustainable wellbeing. These include many sound-based techniques and practices. The extraordinary visionaries and research scientists of the ancient yoga tradition recognised the pervasive, penetrative power of sound and how the readily accessible resources of our own voices can be harnessed to foster harmony through the whole of our being.
The call and response singing and chanting of kirtan, is simple, yet powerful, cleansing and uplifting. During the sessions, James will also speak briefly about kirtan, Sanskrit as an energy-based language, the symbolism and effects of the words we use in the practice, and how kirtan relates to other practices and paths of yoga.
Everyone welcome! Do not worry if you are not a virtuoso singer. The joy and practical benefits of yoga are open to everyone.
